What is a spinal cord injury?

Spinal cord injury is damage caused to the nerves of the spinal cord. Spinal cord is part of the neural system, which starts from the basis of the brain and extends down to your waist.

How is spinal cord injury caused?

A trauma in the spinal cord (e.g. due to road accident) is the most common cause of spinal cord injury. There are diseases that may increase the possibility of such an injury. Following a fall that has caused spinal cord injury, medical examination is required to identify potential damage.

What are the diseases that increase the possibility of spinal cord injury?

People suffering from osteoporosis are at increased risk and must, therefore, be very careful. Normally, this is the case of people aged 60-80 years.

What are the problems caused by spinal cord injury?

This means that some functions regulated by the brain cannot be performed.

What are the forms of spinal cord injury?

An injury may be complete or incomplete. Injuries are also divided into tetraplegia (paralysis and reduced sensation in the hands and feet) and paraplegia (paralysis and reduced sensation only in the feet).

What are the symptoms of the disease?

Acute pain or a sense of pressure in the neck or the back are the first symptoms. If you feel tingling or lose sensation in your hands, feet, fingers or toes, you should also undergo medical examination. You may also have trouble moving parts of your body. Any bladder or bowel problem should alarm you. If you feel pressure in the chest and pain, as well as if you have difficulty breathing following an injury, you must see a doctor.
